The Modern Language Association has now published its 7th edition of its MLA style guide book; between the 6th and 7th editions of MLA 2011 there are some important changes to be noted.

So what is MLA? MLA is the Modern Language Association who has published the 7th edition of its style guide book, the MLA format, and the most monumental change that has occurred in this book this year has to be the use of italics. The old MLA style used to underline the titles of the publications specifying certain words. The MLA 2011 replaces this with italics.

When using the MLA style, italics have to be used in both the text and the MLA cited list, it has to be used in the names of books, plays, poems, published books, names of ships, aircrafts and space craft’s to name a few…Italics are also used to point out foreign text in the English words.

The MLA format is used with a large variety of regulations. Among the large number of references that MLA format uses for academic papers are usually printed source or website references. However, many other kinds of sources can be used.

  • Medium Designation

The MLA 2011 handbook also states that the medium (Print/Web) as its original source must be quoted in the MLA works cited list (bibliography) at the end of the paper.

The MLA 2011 style should be there to follow rather than trying to remember those guides and everything else. University and school professors in the fields of English also encourage students to follow MLA format rules.

The reason for these formulations is that when writing academic papers you must write down where you got all the information from, giving credit to that person or persons. Besides, one should recognize that it is someone else’s work and not your own. So they too can research where you got it from and read it for themselves. As a writer you must offer plenty of information and sources on the MLA works cited page so they can research it, otherwise it is known as plagiarism.

When writing an academic paper there are 2 things that you should do regarding the MLA works cited page and the MLA citations, the origin of the source that is used in the hard copy of the paper has to be referenced at the back of the document and reversingly each origin that is on the reference list has to be in the body of the paper.

“Giving credit where credit is due” is very important when writing in MLA style especially in-text MLA citations.

  • Author’s last name and first initial, at the start of the sentence or in the parentheses at the end or you can paraphrase it
  • Telling the reader the page number where you got it from
  • Using quotation marks is usually the required when quoting someone or something, if the quote is less than forty words
  • If the whole quote is longer, then you need to indent one inch from the margin, don’t use quotation marks and you need to double space and also put the page number after the full stop
  • Make sure your MLA citation gives the reader the right location on the page of the article or book, if you use the author’s name, it makes it a lot easier to find

Two portions of the in-text citation are used as visual bookends, to see how much you give credit to the author. The beginning is namely a signal phrase, a lead-in or an attributive tag.

Your MLA Works Cited page

  • When you write the reference page or the MLA citation page, the title must be centered and at the top of the page, no bolding, no italics or quotation marks.
  • All the referencing material needs to be in alphabetical order, with the last name first or if there is no author then put the most important first word in the title.
  • Everything on the MLA cited page must be double spaced
  • Hanging indents should be used for all entries, each sentence indented half inch from margin
  • Your Works Cited page with all the referencing sources should be on a separate page and should be at the end of the document

Of all the works cited each should have the author, title, publication information, medium publication.

Electronic referencing should have date of access, paying particular attention to formatting and punctuation.

Print Sources—general guidelines

When we refer to print sources we mean things like books or articles or journals etc.

  • Write the last name, first name, middle initial if any, of the author. Don’t write the degrees like M.D. or PhD, if more than one author lists them after the first one
  • After that, title of the book or article, then full stop. The title should be in italics which tell us it is a book title. If it is an article, place the title in quotations marks
  • All words should start from capital letters except if they are articles, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions and ‘to’ infinitives. The first words of the title or subtitle even the small words such as if, a, from, to, should be capitalized.
  • Publication details must be given

In a book form you need to give city of publication with a colon, and the publisher, then a comma, and then the year it was published. The medium comes next such as Print.

In an article format, the title of the journal, magazines, or newspaper should go in italics which then follows the right publication date and pages. Scholarly journals you need the volume and issue numbers with the date.

The Magazine format, give the date, day, month, year then let them know what medium it is which is print.

Electronic Sources—general guidelines

Electronic source citations are usually formatted like the print sources, e.g. author, title, publication then the information about the electronic path, but you also have to include the date when you visited the site. In the 7th edition of the MLA handbook it is not necessary to put the URL’s which can often be difficult to enter.

  • Include author’s last name, first name, and middle initial if any.
  • Then title of the work, whether that be an ebook, online article, or webpage. Using a website or book, the title should be italicized. Article titles in quotation marks; and words need to be capitalized.
  • The next step; make sure you include the publication whether it is version or edition, the sponsor of the site, date of publication, and the medium, which would be the web.
  • And then you put the date you accessed the information on giving day, month, and the year.
