Essay on Virginia Woolf’s “A Room of One’s Own”

In “A room of ones own” Virgina Woolf investigates the phenomenon called “androgynous” mind trying to find factors which influence a writer. Through the image of “Shakespeare’s Sisters” (women writers) Woolf depicts that women are denied opportunities to become writers limited by their social and domestic roles. And even if a woman like Judith has Shakespeare’s gift, she would be never accepted by other writers.

Women should fight for freedom, rights and happiness, and fight for their own room to write. These circumstances resulted in the tragic fate and inability to express their talent and writing skills. Woolf underlines that that a woman writer is suppressed by socioeconomic factors including poverty and lack of privacy, but ” Jane Austen and the Brontes and George Eliot could no more have written than Shakespeare could have written without Marlowe” (Woolf, 1999, p. 34). The same ideas can be applied to people of color who were deprived their chance to earn for living because of social prejudices and wrong morals values. Most immigrants had no means, they could not buy food, pay for health care and shelter. Similar to women, most immigrants were destined be poor faced with inequality and racism. The main implications for immigrants included bad education facilities in contrast to native population.

Modern society tries to eliminate gender and racial differences between people. It is possible to say that there are no prejudices against women and people of color who write. In contrast, most of these groups are supported by literary societies and mass media. In modern world, states and international organizations pay attention to human rights and protect minority groups from discrimination. Also, this movement creates a problem when women and people of color receive much publicity and attention male writers or native citizens. These developments are accompanied by increased competition between low classes and labor force. It is possible to say that Woolf’s arguments are not valid in modern society, but the only thing a writer needs is “a room of one’s own”. “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction” (Woolf, 1999, p. 3). The main problem faced by contemporary writers is lack of money and economic conditions. Cultural changes and education opportunities inspire many young people to receive high quality education and earn for living. So, modern life proves the idea that nothing block women’s creativity and talent, and writers work with the masculine and feminine side of the brain.
